The word “hobnob” means to hang out with, or spend discretionary time with someone. Because you’re holding so many things together in your business and your life, you’ve got limited time for hobnobbing. So, whether it’s face-to-face or by phone, Skype, email or social media, it’s important to hobnob with the right people.
Here are five characteristics of those who will add value to your business and your life.
5 Types of People to Hobnob With
1. People who are remarkable in some way.
Spend your discretionary time with folks who have an interesting background; every conversation with them leaves you a little better, smarter, deeper, or stronger.
2. People with a Win-Win mentality.
Rather than wasting your time with those who always try to best you out, invest your time with people who understand that by working together both of you can come out ahead.
3. People who inform you.
Whether they’re in your industry or a totally different walk of life, spend time with people who add to your bank of knowledge.
4. People who are upbeat and positive.
Invest your time with those who will lift you up rather than drag you down.
5. People you can partner with.
Whether it’s responding jointly to an RFP, carpooling to preschool, or sharing office space, invest your time with those who will lighten your load while you lighten theirs.
What a great way to break this down. I’ve been thinking about the saying: “You are the average of the top 5 people you hang out with” and really wondering how that applies to me right now. I hobnob with other parents, friends, business colleagues, clients, coaches and other circles. I get different things from people in different groups. I have them in my life for different reasons and your list here was a great way to think about who I hang around instead of thinking of the “5 people” I hang around most.
This is also a great way to get out if your social comfort zone and surround yourself with people that stretch you. How do they do this? By their belief and support in you. It gives you the courage to say yes.
